The Norwegian-Romanian Palme d'Or winner will have its Norwegian premiere as the Opening film of New Nordic Films 2026. Director Cristian Mungiu will walk the red carpet on Tuesday, August 25.
- We have followed the remarkable and deeply humanistic filmmaker Cristian Mungiu for several years, and we are delighted to present Fjord, which is yet another masterpiece from this Director. It is a great honour to welcome him to the red carpet in Haugesund. As a Nordic film and co-production market, it is a perfect fit to open with a Romanian-Norwegian film, co-produced with the Nordic countries and France, and filmed locally in Western Norway. It is even more exciting this year as France is our country of focus at the festival, says Gyda V. Myklebust, Head of New Nordic Films.
- We are incredibly proud that Fjord has received such a strong international reception, including the Palme d'Or itself, say the film's Norwegian producers Dyveke Bjørkly Graver and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar, who have a number of award-winning films behind them. - Cristian Mungiu has created a deeply human drama that raises questions for which there are no easy answers. At the same time, this is a story with strong Norwegian roots, filmed in Norway and with some of our leading actors in front of the camera. We are looking forward to opening New Nordic Film in Haugesund and for the audience to see the film in cinemas in September!
The Oscar-nominated Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan face every parent’s worst nightmare in the contemporary drama Fjord, set against the backdrop of a Norwegian fjord landscape. The film won the Palme d'Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and tells the story of a Norwegian-Romanian family who move from Romania to a small town in Norway. There, the family of five children quickly becomes engaged in the local congregation and befriends their neighbors, who have children of similar ages. When the school discovers that the family’s daughter has bruises on her arms and suspects that she has been subjected to physical punishment, action is taken.
Fjord is a beautiful, gripping, and thought-provoking family drama that explores cultural differences, tolerance, conformity, and the fragile boundaries between private life and institutional power. This is a film that will spark discussion.
The film is distributed by Another World Entertainment and will have theatrical release in Norway September 4.
- It is a great honor to distribute the Palme d'Or winner Fjord, which is now making Norwegian film history. And that is precisely why Fjord is a perfect film to open New Nordic Films in Haugesund with all its awards, partners and co-productions. We are looking forward to it, says Marius Skarnes Olsen in Another World Entertainment.
