One winter night in Holmlia, 15-year-old Benjamin loses his life – killed by 19-year-old Joe Erling, simply because he is dark-skinned. One year later, Benjamin's mother, Marit, faces every parent's worst nightmare, the trial of the man who killed her son. We follow Marit's fight in court and through flashbacks to life before the tragedy, two destinies are woven together. Benjamin grows up surrounded by friends and a mother who takes care of him, while Joe Erling is shaped in an environment marked by neglect. Both live in areas with low social status. Benjamin experiences that the police stigmatize him and Joe Erling slips into the neo-Nazi Boot Boys environment in search of safety. The film depicts how vulnerable it is when young boys try to find themselves and their belonging – and how catastrophic the consequences can be when hatred is given room to grow. 25 years after the murder of Benjamin Hermansen, this is a story we still have to tell – about racism, loss, and the hope of reconciliation in a society that must not forget.
