After moving from Norway to Iceland, 16-year-old Júlía is caught between raising her younger sister and longing for a life of her own. Joining the school newspaper draws her into the orbit of its charismatic editor, Salka, and a close-knit community where she discovers friendship, belonging and the freedom to imagine a different version of herself. But as she struggles to keep a painful secret to herself, the more she discovers who she could become, the harder it is to remain the person everyone at home needs her to be, forcing her to choose between responsibility and the freedom to discover who she is.
Director
Vala Ómarsdóttir is an Icelandic writer, director and performance maker. Drawing on her background in movement and theatre, she brings a distinctive actor-centred approach to filmmaking. She studied at Goldsmiths, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and the Icelandic Film School. Just a Kid is her feature debut.
