THE RIOT is a film about the fight against oppression in the mining community of Sulitjelma at the start of the 20th century. The mining company has set their own rules using a private police force and their own currency, while they control all the land in the area and treat their workers like slaves. Konrad and his fellow exploited workers join forces to revolt against the ruthless Wenstrøm and the mining company.
NILS GAUP is one of Norway’s most prominent directors, his debut film The Pathfinder (1987) was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Gaup’s next feature Håkon Håkonsen (1990) was the most expensive film production in
Scandinavian history at the time, partly
financed by Disney. In 2008, Gaup directed the blockbuster Kautokeino Uprising and in 2016, the sensational The Last King, a tremendous success sold to over 60 countries.
